I think I've actually worked out what's causing this in the meantime. There's a no-fill no-stroke rectangle within the navigation component (to make the component the size I want it). This was placed at the top of the layers in the group, and was the only thing selectable as a result.

    NJA commented  ·

    Hi,

Here is a file and a link which show the problem. The navigation can't be looked at with the specs function, but the others can.

    Hi Naomi,

Thanks for the extra information – this happens with linked components that have nested components and you unlink the outer component. I believe there are historical reasons for this behavior, but it’s reasonable to say it is also unexpected behavior and so I have logged a bug internally for it.

As a workaround, you could first convert the linked component in the Assets panel to a local component, and then ungroup it. That will provide the desired behavior when you ungroup the outer component.

    Thank you,
    Joe

    NJA commented  ·

    Hi Joe,

That is what I'd expect and want to happen, yes. But it's ungrouping/unlinking every nested component within.

I've attached a video which shows this happening. It applied to all the nested components. You can see this in the layers panel.

    Thanks,
    Naomi

This is super annoying, please fix! It just won't paste some objects from illustrator, whilst others are fine.

It seems to be affecting only single path objects using no fill. If I select two of these objects it pastes fine.

Also, this seems to be a temperamental bug, as if I quit the program and re-open my files, it works okay. I think there's a loss of connection between the linked components at some point, maybe it times out or doesn't refresh the link when files are saved with different names or something.

    NJA commented  ·

Okay, this is still an issue.

I've got a master component document with buttons, I've used these in another document, changing the text and the width of them.

If I paste these adjusted buttons back into the master document or another document, they partially revert to the original component (adjusted size, master component text).

    NJA commented  ·

I've just tried to recreate this bug and found I can't - it's working as expected now.

I think my files weren't syncing together properly or the link between them was maybe broken? I had 3 design files (all using one - a 4th - file as a component source) that I uploaded and sent to a client with errors due to master component content being brought in via copy & paste. I've since manually corrected the files so they're not useful to share either.

Apologies I can't seem to recreate it now! Thank you for looking into this.

I can't believe Adobe has shipped this version of Xd, this is the latest in a long line of bugs that is making my week really really difficult.

Components seem to retain overrides randomly.

    1. v 19.1.22.6

    2.
    - Create master component (text using character style, icons) in document A. (Also, why isn't this instance automatically assigned as the master?)
    - Use component on artboard in this document. Make a text change.
    - Paste this artboard into a new document (B). Component is linked.
    - This component has randomly overriden the text styles and content (neither now match the master component).

    3. I want copy and paste to remember the content that is being copied and then... paste it! If I wanted to revert to the master I would use the component from the assets.

    4. Pasting component into a new document seems to strip out capitalisation in character styles, as well as revert the text to the master component. It's actually not even matched the master, it's added random capitalisation in the text.

    5. Screenshot 1 shows Document B (left, blue) with capitalisation removed from 1 instance, and arbitrarily assigned in the other. Master component is on right (red) in Document A, clearly showing capitalisation assigned. Screenshot 2 shows the instance of it in document A with text amends, which was copied into document B.

The component in the blue circle should match the component in screenshot 2.

@Jody - There is no way of pinning interactive elements, it's not solved at all. I have to manually link up every single item in a (global) navigation menu across every single page.

    Hi Jan,

Thanks for your reply. Apologies if I was unclear – I didn’t mean to say that all your nested components must be master components, but to demonstrate that if you are editing master components, the edits will propagate to the other instances.

So in the original example you posted, you were actually overriding the fill color in a nested instance (not a master component). If instead, you right-clicked on the nested instance and chose ‘Edit Master Component’, your viewport would have panned to the master component, and then any changes you made to the master component would propagate to its instances. It doesn’t matter if the instance is nested in another component or not.

So nested components are fully supported in this new master/instance model, but the important thing to remember is you must edit the master component, either directly in the parent component or by right-clicking on…

This is incredibly annoying. It makes components with text virtually useless.

If I create a component using a couple of character styles and icons (eg, a carousel with a heading & sub heading) - I want to use this instance across pages of a website. But the text would change per page.

It's complicated by the fact i have to split out my desktop/tablet/mobile files to upload for review. (I create all in one master file, then create 3 separate files to upload & show a client) - When I paste my pages into these new documents, text in each component is reverted to the master one.

However, within some buttons I've created this hasn't happened. It's really weird.

As a workaround for this featire you can make your home artboard an “index” page which links to the different views/subsets of your design. When you share your design and visit the URL you can click through to the real home artboards and copy the URL (each artboard has it’s own URL on the shared link). You can then share these URLs to link people to a subset of your design.

We hope to be able to formalize this feature in the future.

It would be really useful to be able to select specific screens to add to a prototype (instead of automatically uploading all screens in a document or all screens linked up).

Eg: I work on a full website design in a single document - both mobile and desktop screens. I want to be able to generate two separate links, one for mobile screens and one for desktop screens, so I can have my client look at them separately.

There isn't a way to do this currently without having two documents (which makes returning to amend them difficult, as I haven't got the screens next to each other & some parts are now linked symbols from my master document, but if I replace an artboard all my links disappear!

+1 for this! A default action to apply as fill on click of swatch, but maybe an icon over on the right side to apply as border instead of fill. Having to right click & select from menu is an extra step that could have a quick workaround for usability.

+1 for this. It would be really useful to be able to apply a character style without colour overrides. Also to be able to change all instances of a font/weight/size together without having to add every colour instance to the character styles.

Hi, everyone! In the August release of Adobe XD, we’ve introduced the ability to consume colors and character styles from your existing Creative Cloud library. We’re working on bringing you the ability to bring in graphics (both bitmaps and vectors) as well, so we’re keeping this feature open until we get that out the door.

In the meantime, if you have feedback on what we’ve already released, please do file a new idea so that we can get community feedback on it.

If you haven’t seen the update yet, launch the Creative Cloud desktop application, click on the gear icon, and select “Check for App Updates.”

    -Elaine

Linked symbols is helping this issue, but I still need to be able to share colour palettes and character styles to a new document. Just a function to save a master list of styles/colours/symbols that can be retrieved when opening a new document.

Example: I've designed a website in a document, now I have to create some graphics for social use - I'll do this in a new document, but all my colours and fonts have to be re-added to the assets panel. Loading a saved set would save a lot of time (like loading brushes in photoshop for example).

I'd really like to see this feature implemented too. The layout of my artboards in Xd can be more of a 'mind-map' style that doesn't necessarily translate into the order I'd like to share with a client, and often my initial prototypes don't include hotspots for time-saving reasons.
