I have found a workaround for this problem. Copy the component you'd like to create a new version of into a new document. In the assets panel right click and select "make local component". You can now copy and paste it back to the original document.

This problem has been massively compounded by the addition/use of component states because if you accidentally convert a shape to a path it breaks the animation as well and turns it into a regular transition.

    Proposed solutions.
    1. A warning box that says "are you sure you want to convert this shape into a path"
    2. Checkbox in the preferences that says "never convert shapes to paths"
    3. A command-click is required to degrade a shape to a path.

This basically renders this software unusable seeing as if I don't get the size EXACT or God forbid I need a different size I have to resize all the states... terrible.

The functionality of this program should match what's possible in HTML 5 EXACTLY.
