more tolerance for selecting shapes when zoomed out
If you are zoomed out you hardly can select a small shape. Maybe you should adjust the selection tolerance depending on the zoom.

Adjusting width of thin rule rectangles should be easier when not super zoomed in. Show middle handles on thin rectangles when zoomed out, as opposed to corner handles.

You can click and drag to create a marquee selection rectangle to select shapes that are hard to click. Does that help?
