Cropping containers
Rectangles and ellipses can be marked as "cropping". Such cropping containers will apply a cropping mask on anything put inside it. This should be a reversible behavior.
We already have two ways of cropping using Mask with Shape.

This could be much easier if we had a marquee select tool. Make quick mockups when working with screenshots and bitmaps so much quicker than fiddling around with the (rather basic) mask tool.

I am not looking to crop - I simply want to select an area in an image, cut it out, and paste it as a layer. I do this all the time for software redesign. Where's my marquis like was in FireWorks? And don't tell me I'm outdated, this is a very common usage, but people often have problems expressing it - the search constantly comes up with Cropping/masking, is that all there is? Maybe I missed how, but I need a quick way to do this or XD just doesn't cut it.

I need more Tutorials of Adobe xd, explaining features for mac & Windows at the same time..... most of it are for mac only. What about the rest?
Sometimes it´s very difficult to make a simply thing .......because usually i find the answer for mac only. -

We NEED an image cropping function, please don't mark this as completed!

Sketch and Figma offer image cropping without needing a mask... Masking an image to crop is stupid.

This should not be marked as complete. There is definitely room for improvement for cropping/masking within XD. How about frames like InDesign uses? Or a way to directly crop please? Right now I use a lot of back and forth with PS because the masking doesn't always fit our needs... when sharing files masks can get altered and the current user may not be aware of the original mask/"crop".

cropping/masking is still a bit of a mess in XD

mask with shape feature will just fit the image to the shape. It sometimes just make the image smaller. Crop is different, it will crop the specific area you want and remove those you don't want.

Lads and lasses, it would be really, really useful if you had a standard crop tool like you would find in photoshop. You know how it works.
You select the layer you want to crop, you take the crop tool, you then click the edge of the image or shape or whatever, drag the edge towards the centre of the image then let go when you have the desired shape.
This is very useful for quickly trimming down oversized images to fit your artboard.
Cheers you lot.

Why would you mark this as completed, when it's not complete? There's a work-around, but the feature suggested isn't in fact completed.

You need to select both the layers you want to mask from the layers panel.
Select the object (you want to mask) and the shape and you can follow 2 ways:
1- Select both the object and shape and right click & choose "Mask with layer"
2- Select both the object and shape and simply use shortcut "Shift+Ctrl+M"
That's it!

man add some more features still need more development to make this application perfect
there are lots of features which are in photoshop but its not here -

Once the photo is within the shape, you cannot move it around or scale it. This is so frustrating. As it stands, we have to edit images in photoshop (to get the crop and scale that we want), save it, then bring it in to XD. This seems like such an obvious feature to have, yet with every release, it STILL isn't available. I would no consider this feature complete.

I second what Craig Clark said -- cropping containers that are more akin to how InDesign works would be lovely.
There's a lot to like about the Xd's existing cropping/masking functionality. It's very convenient to be able to simply drop an image onto an existing shape or container for automatic masking. But if I need to adjust the size or shape of the container later, Xd's behavior is infuriating. The ability to resize a container without forcing a proportional resize of the image the container is masking really is a must-have feature. Otherwise, I'm forced to introduce other apps (like Photoshop) to my mock-up/wireframe workflow -- which kind of defeats the purpose of Xd a bit, doesn't it?
In any case, I think Xd has come a long way, and I'm glad I don't have to leave the Creative Cloud economy to get the kind of functionality an app like Sketch provides.

Yep, first run with XD to mockup a website and I need to crop an image. I would then like to use that image in my design.

Aaah! Found it, Object > Mask with Shape. Seems a bit erratic to edit the position of the image in the mask. It looks like once you mask, you double-click to edit the Mask, then click the image cut, then paste, to get it out of the Mask...

Is there any cropping feature built into Xd yet?
-
Craig Clark commented
I would love to see this feature. I find working with images difficult. I would like to see cropping containers that work the way they do in InDesign. Something where I can easily resize and crop within the container. Right now I'm going into another program to resize/crop images for each new layout.

Hear hear! I can't believe even a beta product does not have this, one of the most basic, of design needs. My work around is to select out of Photoshop with a same-size marque. Zero flexibility within Xd—adjusting images for personal, or client, requests would become a workflow nightmare. Until added, this product is DOA.
