To be able to edit layers on top of a locked one
If I have overlapping layers and I want to edit one of them, I usually lock the ones I do not want edited/ to move. Using Illustrator, I can draw a rectangle and set it as my artboard background and work freely without it going anywhere. I can't seem to do this in Adobe XD.
As we haven’t seen a response to our question in over three months, I’m marking it as inactive. Please do feel free to file it again if you still want this feature!

Locking prevents selecting a group, under the locked layer, by clicking on an object.
you can Ctrl+Click to select a specific layer under the locked one but not their group/component.
Area selection work for groups and not for layers (that are inside the group).
You cannot edit text under a locked layer.I would expect the selection to work without the Ctrl/Cmd key and selection should be from the top down, including groups/components.
