Saw the response from Adobe, which isn't illogical, but just poor design, ironically.

Being able to comment by @mention someone is a core communication requirement in a tool like XD. I am fine with having an account to be able to comment, but some people we need to collaborate with do not have Adobe accounts. If there was a free type account where you sign up but don't need to buy an Adobe license to just comment and be tagged by @mention in comments, that would be ideal.

Once everyone has an account though, the @mention just needs to work, without having to comment first on the XD. Just make this simple. Without this ability to @mention co-workers, clients, partners then XD is just a pain to use beyond just creating nice UIs.

In a shared XD link; Let me be able to mention any e-mail address.

This is an important shortcoming. It is not nice to not be able to provide direct information to users and customers. It does me an additional job and it is not effective at all.

I understand the login issue, but you should at least be able to write an email in the comment, and for that comment to be sent to the guest's emails. Which would help include more people in the design process and removing the "Create an Adobe account" barrier. (Even though Adobe business people would probably not like that)

This is a rather ridiculous catch-22....I want to @ someone to get their feedback, but can't @ them unless they've already commented.

This is still frustrating that you can't even mention the person who created the file (presumably unless they've already commented once).

It seems like you should be able to @ any member of your team, not just ones that have commented on the document already. What if I want to bring a teammates attention to it? And I assume Adobe knows who is on my team, and could easily populate the @ list.

short term, it seems like an obvious fix to show the file creator auto populated in the @mention dropdown, plus anyone who views the file and is logged in. that will at least start to address this issue, which is a major pain point for my team as well.

in the future, I hope you'll provide a way to allow access to team members and auto populate the @mention menu with identified team members

Thank you for reaching out to us with your requests.

If you are creating a public link in XD, it can be accessed by anyone who has the link and it has no security layer. In this case, @mention only lists names of the users who has commented once. Please note that anyone with the link can potentially open it in a web browser and view the content. They do not need to sign-in at all. For @mention to list names, we will need to know the users accessing it. In other words, users who have signed in to access it.

This is true for Guest users as well. When you choose to get in as a Guest user, you do not need to login using any email ID. @mention will not be able to send any notifications to such names that we do not know anything about.

On the other hand, if you are using a private link published from XD, then to access such a link, users will have to login using their Adobe ID (adobe ID can also be a free account!). In this scenario, @mention will list all the users whom you have invited on that private link (without them having to comment at all). This is because, we already know who are the invitees and hence know their email ID's.
