Auto Save (in case of system crash)
Auto save take away the worry of saving and losing data.
Hi everyone,
With XD versions 8 and 9 we’ve gradually released Auto-Recovery. This is a feature that restores files automatically in the event of an application or system crash. Auto-Recovery is enabled by default and available for both Windows 10 and Mac users.
How it works:
- While editing an XD file, Auto-Recovery runs in the background and stores the edits in a backup file at every 5 seconds. Every time you save the file, the backup is cleaned up from your disk, so there’s no impact on storage.
- In the event of an application or system crash, the backup file is used to restore the last unsaved edits to the original files.
- At next XD launch, the recovered file is available as a recent file in the Start screen or the “File” menu option.
- Recovered files can be identified by the “*” character added at the end of the document title.
- This feature has no impact on XD’s or your device’s speed and performance.
Auto-Recovery is not meant to substitute the workflow of manually saving the file. Continue to save your XD files frequently using the CMD / CTRL –> Save option.
Thank you for your patience and feedback! Update XD to the latest version and let us know if you experience any issues.
Best,
Dan

I add myself. Lost 2 days of work. I kind of just stupidly relied that in 2018 this can't happen anymore, used to work with cloud based tools, or autosaved files it feels like being 10 years behind.

my XD just crashed. When I re-open the xd file with (*) mark, xd crash again and now there is no xd file marked with * in open recent file. Now I have to start editing from the last saved file and lost all my work for 3 hours. I'm using xd on windows 10.

I done know how to enable this, I just missed all my work :( and I don't find the recovery file
-
Bruno Alves: There's no impact on cloud backup apps. The backup file where we store progress at every 5 second has no connection to the cloud sync workflows. That sync happens only when the file is saved by the user.

Great to hear! Thanks.

Hi Dan, is there any impact on cloud backups like OneDrive or Dropbox? If the file is saved every 5 seconds, it means a new file will be upload to the cloud every 5 seconds?

Greetings,
XD 8 now restores files automatically (if you have saved the file at least once) in case there is an application or system crash. Auto-Recovery is available for both Windows 10 (Fall Creators update) and Mac users. Auto-recovered files will appear in Recent File list with a * next to it.
But keep in mind that Auto-Recovery does not substitute the workflow of manually saving the file. Continue to save your XD files frequently using Cmd > Save or Ctrl > Save.
If auto-recovery is not working for you, please help us understand what is happening. We will need to know your OS version, your XD version and even more helpful would be to look into the logs: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-log-collector.html.
One possible reason would be a corrupt environment, if this is the case then this page might help you: https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-unexpected-behavior-user-account.html
Thanks,
Letitia -

last night I finish my prototype at 12 midnight with my home computer
when going to the office in the morning, nothing in sync in adobe cloud, I think adobe cloud is not good enough,
At this moment, I think about moving all file to google drive file stream instead which extremely perfect.
for the autosave, I would think about the script to make windows doing ctrl-s every 5 minute instead, but I am not sure it will work order, or I should remind myself to press ctrl s as soon as I can remember while working in xd.
That all I can solve.

I have XD 8.0.22, and my XD has unexpectedly crashed twice in the past two days, both times I've lost all the work I'd done since my last save.

Hey guys, starting with XD 8.0 (released yesterday), you will no longer lose your work in the event of a crash or some other event that causes XD to terminate unexpectedly.

I can't believe Autosave and recovery is not built in. We too have been working for hours and had a crash.

About had my limit with this... 2hrs of work lost after AdobeXD crashed. So close to just dumping XD company wide now after this.

There should be a temp file that's created, just like you do in Photoshop.
This feature has been started for 14 months to the day ... I understand that development takes a long time, but 14 months for an auto-save feature, which already exists in most of Adobe's other products?
