Yes, it makes sense! Once we import SVG, we essentially treat it like any other object. It sounds like you want to ensure that your SVGs retain some “image” properties and be able to swap them the way you can already swap images. I’ll keep this one as open for now! Thanks for getting back to us. :)

This could be implemented by simply allowing to select another Artboard as the current one's background, instead of or additionally to a fill color/gradient (in Appearance section).

IMO the default behavior should be "override", like it is with raster images. Current masking behavior could be achieved with a modifier key (ctrl, alt) if it is really needed.
I can't understand why vector graphics object stored in library cannot be dragged to existing canvas object the same way! It is neither overridden nor masked, just new one is created.
