Axure solves it at its simplest - fist selected is the key.

Many apps align to the first selected, and I believe this is the most natural and easy to implement.

Current Preview options deliver a fixed-size design inside a fixed-size window. This leads to a "Flash-like" feel, that doesn't really creates a real web experience for the designer, the team and specially for user testing.
Suggestion: leverage the amazing Responsive Resizing in a new Web Preview, directly from XD (instead of sharing), in search for a real web feel, that 99% of the times means horizontally adaptive and vertically scrollable.
Some concrete ideas depicted in the attached image:
- 3rd preview type - “Web Preview”
- Prototype “Web Preview” options:
- “full width” for objects
- alignment for artboards
- Web Preview in the browser
- wide immersive preview web experience
- artboard box as invisible, flexible, responsive container
- real time “Responsive Resize” for the preview
- no scaling distortion
- paves way for device specific artboards (designers are struggling about it manually)
- browser buttons and future HTML input enhances user testing
- cloud files/URL’s simplify shared preview
- unified wireless device previewThere are many other related posted ideas. I hope someone have a look upon this.

I believe XD already have them:
1 - Project Artboards: in the Layers pane, when nothing is selected, it lists all artboards.
2 - Project Components: in the Assets pane, there is a Components group with all the masters. Is it what you are looking for?

Think of an "Auto" checkbox alongside Scrolling's "Viewport Height", that would fit the artboart to the device width, with free vertical scroll.
Considering screen sizes vary wildly in every scenario we design for (design review, user testing and of course, production), it would be much better to be able to define the design only in terms of the artboard's width, and the fullscreen prototype preview would fit the design proportionally to the device width, and scrolling vertically using the device's viewport height (not a fixed one).
This is the default behavior for the HTML world, the very presence of a dotted line as a fixed scroll "fold" may even influence designers backwards into thinking that line even exists or should. I believe many designs need to account for the absence of this exact height.
There is an old similar issue, but I tried to be more specific.

Aligning to first selected is a simple solution, which used to help me a lot on Axure, and could be really useful for XD.
The first selected object could act as the key object for alignment, avoiding the extra step of pointing it explicitly.
I attached 2 small videos to compare Axure and XD on this feature.
