I'd sum up my critique of XD's Layer panel as having none of the necessity of Photoshop (because XD's direct selection on the canvas works so well) and none of the utility of Illustrator (arbitrary 'layers' used for grouping/locking/hiding things hierarchically like background, vs content, vs huds/floating elements, vs a layer for notation). As it is, I've found the layer panel in XD not at all even remotely useful.

While XD doesn’t yet have this feature to save gradients in the color picker popup’s swatches, you do have several other options today:

    - Store gradients in the Assets panel swatches: open the Assets panel on the left side (View > Assets), and click the “+” next to Colors. Then select any other object and click the gradient swatch to apply it to that object.

    - Copy gradient fills between objects: use regular Copy on the source object, then select the destination object and choose Paste Appearance.

This. Please let me turn off A = artboard tool... I literally never need to make an empty artboard using that tool, 100% of the time I hit "A" it's expecting a direct-selection tool as in all the other Adobe apps I've used for the last 25+ years.

Note: there’s a limited version of this feature already available. If you select an existing piece of text and then leave it selected while you use the Text tool to create new text, its style will match the piece of text you had selected.

And for font size... and for kerning and letter spacing... pretty much need keyboard shortcuts to drive all type attributes.
