Reusable symbols / master objects
It would be very helpful to have symbols in order to have reusable elements that can be updated in one place and have those edits instantly take effect in all instances/artboards in the design.
I’m happy to say you can now use symbols in the November release of Adobe XD!
Thanks to everyone who voted on this — it honestly does make a difference in making this happen sooner.
There are lots of ways we could expand on this initial set of symbol features. Please let us know your opinion by upvoting follow-up suggestions like these:
- Different text, color, or other properties in some copies of the symbol (like editing text in a Repeat Grid, for example): https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007/suggestions/13675224-override-text-color-etc-on-a-symbol
- Different size for some copies of the symbol: https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007/suggestions/16939339-scale-resize-symbols-individually
- Interactions/wires on objects inside symbols: https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007/suggestions/16943800-allow-interaction-wires-links-from-objects-inside
- States the symbol can switch between (like a UI component): https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007/suggestions/13031871-add-multiple-states-inside-symbols
- Reorganize your list of symbols: https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007/suggestions/16933993-label-and-reorganise-symbol-library
- Share symbols across documents or within a team (via CC Libraries, for example): https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007/suggestions/12930321-cc-library-support-share-symbols-assets
And as always, feel free to file new suggestions if you have other ideas that aren’t posted in UserVoice yet!

Awesome! Thanks Tom!
If we could get items pinned as well, that would be great! -

From the complexity that people seem to be requesting from this feature, it may be worth considering adding a new workspace for masters to go along with "design" and "prototype" or perhaps even that the design workspace should be split up into multiple workspaces - one tab for each state created.
Whatever puts less stress on performance. The last thing you want is the effect you get in Muse, where switching to the Preview tab feels like a chemical rocket launch, except more dangerous.

Yes! Symbols that support nesting and instances (especially with text, not just colour), and can be saved in a CC library, that would be awesome! Right now in Illustrator I am struggling to judge wether to best use CC graphics (amazing because always available everywhere and so easy to use for collaboration, but seem to have trouble with nesting), or symbols (great at nesting but as far as I can see not 100% compatible with Creative Cloud libraries.

That's great! :) It would be really a cool feature, when symbols could get also "states"! Didn't see this anywhere yet, but what I mean is:
Let's say I have a top bar with a menu. On each art board I have different page displayed, thus logically each different menu item should be highlighted. So far I had to copy a smart object via copy (in Photoshop) and create like that 4 different smart objects (4 menu items) and if something was changed (order of menus) had to change 4 smart object accordantly. That is not an optimal way. So a "State" for an object would be an awesome feature :)
Thanx a lot for your work! :) -

Hope it would be good, if it acts like instance and not as duplicate(PSD Smart Object).
Duplication adds weight to the file size.
Most times, Designers create no.of.variation for a single page/ module design.
Whenever we duplicate the whole element/ page, for creating variation
UI components gets duplicated and adding a weight to file size.Symbol ++with instance++ allows to not only reflect on all duplicated items
But also reduces the weight of file size. -

Please bring it with swatches too! that would be mental. We can change a swatch and the change would be reflected on every symbol used.

Hey, that's wonderful! This is one of the things is gonna make this app really turbo.
I would say, a symbol can be a single element or a group of other elements/symbols. A navigation bar would be a perfect example. It's a symbol which groups other elements (texts, icons, etc). If I have this group defined as a symbol, I can modify any instance of it and the changes should reflect on all instances inside de document. In some cases, I would maybe duplicate this symbol to make a variation and "break link to symbol" would be wonderful, so I can modify something and create a new symbol for an exception. Hope this is clear enough. Cheers!

Yes! And the ability to nest symbols in to each other would be really great. Also, being able to change some attributes of instances of symbols would be cool. Consider a button with the ability to change the label (and have the width adjust with it).
Also, states would be an awesome feature for symbols - think of hover or focus or selected states - but you could have the ability to create whatever states you want. Later comps is helpful for this in Photoshop, but sketch doesn't have anything like this and would give XD an advantage

This is my wish list for symbols
• External symbol library (so it can be shared between multiple documents)
• 9-slicing for buttons
• Options for truncating text (like in xcode)
• Use other symbols as instance overrides.
• performance!! -

I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned this (didn't have time to read all 3 pages of comments). But I'd also like the ability to link to a separate file that contains the symbols. I work in a team environment, where one team member might be updating a master file of common patterns and another team member is simply reusing them in their specific design.

Feature Started! Thank Goodness.... Desperately needed...

This feature would do a major difference in using the app, but instead of one master I would like to be able to create multiple masters (just like in InDesign), as not all pages will follow the same layout. Retaining the links in the master would be very much needed feature too :)

I agree — and with master elements, it would be very helpful to have the page links consistent along with the styling. That way, I do not need to relink all my links in the footer when I copy the element over to another page.

I agree. Having something along the lines of master pages in InDesign would be super helpful.
My suggestion would be to have it work like locking an object. Right clicking on an object or group and having an option "appear on..." and having the ability to select the type of art boards (web, iPhone, iPad) you want that object to appear.
I also think making it as customizable is key. The option to remove the object without affecting the repeat process or other art boards.

sketch isn't also perfect.
I miss symbols with varible. for example: It nice to change the button text and maybe an image. But its not enoug. A button must crow up in the width. That I can't change at symbols. Please make ist better!!!!

Need symbols for global repeat items. Even better if they can have multiple states
For example - the top navigation bar is one single symbol. Within that, it could have a 5 states showing a on-state for each page -

In reality, Photoshop already has some concept of this with Smart Objects. The object could be changed/tweaked separately as needed in each artboard (think a navigation, for example).

Creating master object for a single or a group design objects is an important feature for a designer. While creating a workflow many design objects repeats on different art-boards (example: headers, footers, side menu etc.).
This feature will certainly help increase productivity and reduce duplicate effort / time for designers.
This will also help easily modify the design any apply instantly to all other art-boards just the way repeat grid does on a particular art-board.
Please refer to the link for a quick prototype.

This is crucial when you have dozens of screens!!

Without symbols I'll have to switch to sketch or similar, they're that important.
I would also like to see a program setting to indicate whether symbols by default include the text within them. As well as having a per-symbol setting, so I don't have to change every symbol's setting.
Would also be useful to see animations / prototype attached to the symbols, and editable from a master symbol
