For those who are waiting for this plugin, I'm afraid you have to reach out material design team for that. Like Apple's UI Kits, it depends on them to update or add it to XD.

Will this be the cause of the death of XD?

This is the one thing that is missing in XD. If there will be no MD Editor in the near future I am afraid that I have to switch to Sketch just because of this. Which I obviously dislike, because XD is much more intuitive and smooth....
