move selection in the layers list using a keyboard shortcut
It would be nice if I were able to change my selection in the layers panel using the keyboard only.
Sketch / Studio allow for iterating through the layers list using the shortcut option + tab (or option + shift + tab) in order to change selection.
This is helpful if you have to change the z-order of a lot of layers, as with the mouse you are always at risk of moving layers into groups when dragging them around in the layers panel.
Got it! Thanks for the clarification. I’m leaving this open. :)

I also would love to be able to select and move layers up and down via the keyboard.

All-around I would love more control with keyboard shortcuts in layer selection, but I would love, love, love this one.

@Elaine yes, but I would like to do that without the name being selected. So just switching between layers, without the intent of renaming them. Reason is that I often like to sort them using the keyboard (as it is less likely to accidently group layers that way). Therefore I would need to be able to change selection using the keyboard as well, or else I always have to take my hand off the keyboard in order to select the next layer using the mouse, which is unnecessarily timeconsuming and tedious :)

When creating UI kits, I first develop elements, then rename them in the Layers panel. It's a repetitive process that would be much less frustrating if I could jump to the next item in the list, expand and collapse groups, and rename layers. Instead, any keystroke combination I try manipulates the element on the artboard. I can't even use CTRL-arrows to jump to the beginning or end of words or sentences.
Helpful extensions of this feature might be:
- Batch-editing layer names
- Appending a prefix or suffix in batches to a group of layers
- Searching for a layer by name
- Selecting multiple layers with keyboard shortcuts
- Rearranging layers by name
