Copy from XD & paste into Illustrator (or Photoshop)
For any given vector pieces, to be able to copy from XD and cut to illustrator. We can do it in the other way for now, but it would be great if it could work the other way too.
To rework an icon for example, or trick an object with more advanced tools like in illustrator. Why ? It's faster than to export to svg and export it back again. It would also allow to keep your objects scaled the same way.
This feature is now available in the March release! If you don’t see an update, select the … icon in the Creative Cloud desktop app and select “Check for App Updates.” If you have further feedback on this feature, please feel free to file a new ticket!

I love how it says feature completed in March of 2019. But it Isn't completed at all and they still have people commenting, because it's Completely broken.
I think they used the same engineers that Acrobat uses or something. lol
Oh, you have an object? Here's, I'll put a completely useless clipping mask around it, JUST to be sure.
You've got an image? Here, let me pattern that for you randomly and offset it so that it doesn't match what you wanted in Any way. Oh, you've got text and a rectangle where the text is aligned to the center of the rectangle? HA, not anymore! I'll just shove that over here for no apparent reason. Transparency you say? Nah, I'll just get rid of that. What you start with looks fine. Pasting into Ai is just a bunch of garbage. One funny thing, pasting to Powerpoint is better, lol. But text is still messed up. I thought maybe it was a bug with having responsive on, but no, that's not it. It's just all sorts of messed up.

Just tried that and Illustrator not responding after pasting. So needed to close Ai and open again. Hopefully, this feature will work soon.

So uh, when will this "complete feature" actually work correctly? Because there are sufficient values that get lost in the conversion that it's neigh unusable.
- Alpha (stored in the color settings) turns black, but gradients handle alpha on gradient markers fine
- Text with a transparency setting less than 100% drops into Illustrator at 100% opacity, but shapes handle this fine
- Even though both Illustrator support blending modes, all objects are copied over at normal blend mode. I mean I know you guys are a big organization, but cant you like, collaborate with the Illustrator team to write a parser for a 1:1 import? Why not implement a smart object system that allows user to place XD-copied items into PS as smart objects that, when opened, like a vector smart object, open in XD?
Anyway, XD is a challenging piece of software, because it's kind of a dead end in the pipeline. It's a pain in the ass to get things out of it with correct appearances. What that means is I need to hold the hand of implementer so my comp doesn't get ravaged in its conversion and execution.

Feature completed confirmed.
But [attention]: YOU have to upgrade [BOTH AI and XD] to the latest version to get this feature work.
Just using up-to-date XD but old AI, paste didn't work, found this topic, then upgrade to AI 23.0.4 and XD 20.1.12.4 and copy&paste to AI work just like expected!
Hope this tips helps.
@Frans Hanekom, upgrade both and this should work.

This feature is still not working, all vector files I want to quick edit in illustrator gets rasterized when pasting from XD. Very frustrating and not very reliable when you working on big projects where you constantly need to jump back and forth between different programs.

Mmmmmm, just updated XD to 18.0.12.9 today
Still can't copy and paste a vector from XD to Illustrator, even though the feature seems to be 'Completed'.
Just arrives in Illustrator as a Raster. Currently running the latest release of Illustrator too.
Has the March release been helb back?

There is a problem in this feature ever since the last update. WHen I copy an image to illustrator it turns into a bunch of code. Like this "<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" width="1374.071" height="965" viewBox="0 0 1374.071 965">
<defs>
<pattern id="pattern" width="1" height="1" viewBox="50.197 144.301 1168t.6 820.699">" -

There is still a problem with this feature. When I copy a paragraph into illuster it turns into a bunch of individual edible lines instead of a paragraph.

If you save the xd file as a pdf, you can drag into illustrator and release the clipping mask to have fully editable pieces.

Paste into After effects is more useful ( not export but paste ).

I agree this is a real pain to not have this feature. I guess on big advantage Adobe suite can have is to have vector elements compatible between all apps.
Ok SVG is a solution but it doesn't work really well and most of the time, it request a lot of work to get the same elements (anyway it is better than redoing it from scratch).
Personally I will also appreciate to have it with InDesign, I'm using InDesign for spec descriptions (especially to describe all edge cases), and it is really critical to not be able to import XD vector element on InDesign. -

I notice that when pasting an item with a drop shadow from Illustrator into XD, it typically does not appear in XD (translation/drop-shadow options between the program should be streamlined.)

The SVG export is not optimal and is a waste of time. I work with companies which can not use XD for now and are asking for the files in PSD or AI. If I can not export or copy easily from XD to Photoshop or Illustrator, I will have to change my process and come back to Photoshop/Illustrator for the entire workflow. I will just use XD as a prototyping tool while it is so much more, so sad...

THERE IS WAY!
Export as SVG > Open the SVG with Illustrator ....
Enjoy!

I created something in XD and I want to move it to Illustrator, but I can't. Please make this possible! I miss Sketch! I'm sad that I have to use Illustrator for my new job :(
