Clipping Mask
The current implementation of "masking" is missing a key feature... clipping masks.
I've attached a file to help give a better understanding of what I'm referring to. Thanks!
Mask with shape does what you want it to do! I’m closing this one as completed. :)

I like how they dance around this common issue and seem to avoid just saying, yeah we forgot the most used aspect of this software when we designed it.

I can say it's really not user-friendly. and doesn't support all the use cases. in photoshop I could add a square and round its corner, then put another square on top of that and color them and mask them together.
to achieve somethign like this
but with XD I can't achieve something same easily. if I mask two square from each other usually I lose one of the squares. also if I look into all the manual and websites all ask to choose object menu, windows don't have any object menu. this kind of user experience and lack of right documentation is a deal breaker. I probably go back to my sketch and say the xd is a no-no for now unless they change their head of UI.

We're always looking for ways to improve, but XD can handle the cases you mention here.
You can mask any number of elements, including groups. Draw a mask over the top of elements to be masked, select all elements plus masking shape, and use "Mask With Shape". The first requirement is that shape to be used as a mask is placed over the top of all other elements (i.e. highest in z-order). Only other requirement is that mask intersects each element.
In the case where mask does intersect one or more elements, put elements in a group first, then mask the group.
Please let us know of any other specific cases that you would like to see supported in XD.
Thanks,

Mask with shape has little discover-ability. I just learned about it now for masking shadows. I had to dig on the internet. Can we add a mask/draw inside icon for better discover-ability?

For those asking about using text as the mask, while you can't use 'Mask with Shape' you can do this using Object > Path > Subtract.

You need to select the image within the "masked group".
You can do this on canvas by double-clicking on mask (which should select the masking shape) and then click again to select image. You can also open Layers Panel, click on Mask Group icon to expand it, then select image.
Hope this helps,

You need to select both the layers you want to mask from the layers panel.
Select the object (you want to mask) and the shape and you can follow 2 ways:
1- Select both the object and shape and right click & choose "Mask with layer"
2- Select both the object and shape and simply use shortcut "Shift+Ctrl+M"
That's it!

Windows does not have a top menu with "Object" as a navigation option.
Is this a functionality that is not currently available to windows users?

What about using text as mask? I can mask text with a shape so text would be show partially. It would be useful if we are allowed to do this on reverse too.

Sadly 'Mask with shape' doesn't work for text. Is there a workaround?

How do you mask with a shape in Windows?

Yeah, Adobe XD doesn't do true clipping mask, unfortunately. He wants one image to remain while the other is clipped, sot simply create a shape. Like looking through ship window, while still keeping the window.

Have you tried Object > Mask With Shape? I believe this does exactly what you're looking for.
