Image cropping / repositioning within shape mask (after dragging bitmap into a shape)

Provide the ability to reposition/move images within masks.

If you make a mask via Object > Mask With Shape, then you can double-click into it to reposition the image (or other content) within the mask.

However, if you drag an image file onto a shape, it gets masked by the shape and you CANNOT reposition the image or adjust the cropping. It is auto-cropped to fill the shape when you resize it, but you don't currently get full control of the cropping.

Hi there,

We understand just how frustrating this is when working with images that can’t be repositioned, and have begun to work on this feature. We can’t wait to get it in your hands soon!

Cheers,
Hoyle

As of now if you drag an image from Finder to a vector object in Adobe XD, it becomes the fill of the object. Moving forward, we plan to change this behavior, so that you could edit the mask and the image(s)/object(s) masked.

I agree with Matza, when we drag an image to a shape, instead of crop the image, I belive it should auto mask the imagem with the shape this way we still able to make any adjustment of position or size

I like this idea. Almost as if the object you drag it into could be the clipping mask for the art you dragged in. Then if you don't like the way it scaled the image you could re orient the content.

Currently if I want the drag and drop not to screw up. I have to just drag the artwork onto the paste board draw a rectangle/shape I want it to clip to and then make a mask out of the shape.

I think it's nice if you can re-arrange a picture when dragged into a rectangle or ellipse object when you want it to mask it inside of that object. Right now it only tries to match the width and height of the object, it's cool if you can drag the picture inside and re-arrange it accordingly. Thanks.

It's great to drag and drop into an object and it's great that it fills the shape but often I have images with image-parts that have to removed in photoshop afterwards, so yes, it would be great to be able to move the image inside the object to show my client how the image will be after the photoshop work. If I do this in photoshop before and the client says: "No, thanks, but I don't like this image in the layout" it would be double work … In the design process, without the client, its important too, to estimate if an image will work in the layout after removing the parts of the image that are bad. Thanks!

You can already does this by creating a box or shape. Drag your image or photo onto the canvas ... and hit the Object > Mask with Shape option.

At the moment I have to draw a rectangle to do a mask (to crop an image). At the moment I have to mask 90% of the imported images to visualize the detail of the image I later will do in Photoshop. It would save so much time if image-importing is like in InDesign: I automatically have the small boxes at the edges to crop the image! Look at the attached files!

Allow adjustment to the photo once placed in the shape. Allowing to justify the photo to the top or bottom. In order to make more responsive, and give designer the freedom to have it centered on the aspect of the photo they prefer.

As you've already discovered, the current solution is to use Mask with Shape.

For the issue with Repeat Grids, it is the Repeat Grid cell that is doing the cropping. Currently, RG cells do not auto expand when the size of their content expands and work best with similar size images.

To manually expand RG cell size, select the RG, mouse over the padding between cells until you see a bright pink highlight, you can click/drag to increase the padding between cells. Then select contents and expand into padding area.

Thanks for your feedback. We'll keep this in mind for future enhancements,
    Randy

Edit: Seems to also happen outside of a repeat grid. Once a mask is set, if you drag and drop an image into it, it will often crop it. Seems to only happen to images with a high ratio difference with the container. (Or maybe the crop is less noticeable when the ratio is similar)

Importing an image by dropping it on an existing shape will import the image inside the shape, but will not let you fine-tune the placement of the image. Changing the proportions of the container will resize the image but with no control.

To me, dropping an image on a shape should work exactly like if you take a shape over the picture and "mask with shape". Double-clicking should allow you to fine-tune the placement of the image. It's not such a big deal with architecture or abstract pictures, but when working with portraits, the auto-placement is practically never good.

Additionnally, there seems to be a bug when dropping pictures onto a masked shape within a repeat grid. A certain portion of the images will get cropped, seemingly on import. Re-arranging the mask will never fully recover the image.
